Not only are they blatantly taking the British idea, they’ve also stripped down Watson in the most sexist way possible. Watson is a woman, but no longer a war veteran (why the hell not? That /is/ Watson’s character) and instead she’s a disgraced surgeon. Really? I’m sorry, but it is sexist to imply that not only can a woman not be a war veteran, but that she also has to be disgraced in her profession. If they wanted to make a “feminist Sherlock Holmes” then Sherlock would have been the woman. End of story. What they’re doing is firmly saying that women can only be sidekicks and that they have no ideas of their own and still have to plagiarize the British.
In other news, I totally believe Lucy Liu could play Watson. She would be brilliant. However, they’re not having her play a female version of John Watson. They’re having her play a female stereotype to stand in and put up with their drug-addict version of Sherlock Holmes. Lucy Liu is literally the only selling point for anyone who could even remotely call themself a Sherlock Holmes fan, and she’s playing the worst, most offensive character.
Basically, just please ignore the show. If no one watches it, they’ll figure it out and stop this bullshit. :) Thanks.
